Nissan is recalling over 440,000 cars and SUVs in the United States because of an engine problem that could cause the engine to fail, making driving unsafe. The recall affects some of Nissan’s most popular models, including the Nissan Rogue (2021–2024), Nissan Altima (2019–2020), and two Infiniti models: the QX50 (2019–2022) and QX55 (2022). Most of the recalled vehicles are Nissan Rogues, which are very common on American roads.
The issue is with the engine bearings. There’s a manufacturing defect that can cause these bearings to break down. If that happens, the engine could lose power or even stop working while you’re driving, which is obviously dangerous. Nissan says this problem is linked to their 1.5L 3-cylinder and 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engines.
What is Nissan doing about it?
Nissan will fix the problem for free. Here’s what will happen:
- Dealers will check the engine oil pan for any signs of metal debris, which would show the engine is already being damaged.
- If they find metal particles, the engine will be repaired or replaced at no cost to you.
- If there’s no metal, they’ll do some basic maintenance: for the 1.5L engines, they’ll replace the oil pan gasket, change the oil, and update the engine software; for the 2.0L engines, they’ll just change the oil.
When will owners be notified?
- Nissan will start telling its dealers about the recall from July 15, 2025.
- Car owners will begin getting official notification letters starting August 25, 2025.
What should you do if you own one of these cars?
If you drive one of the affected models, keep an eye out for warning signs like strange engine noises, dashboard alerts, or your engine running rough. If you’re worried, you can call Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261 or Infiniti at 1-800-662-6200. You can also check your car’s recall status by entering your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall website.
A few extra notes:
- This is a big recall, but it’s not the first time Nissan has had to fix a major issue. They’re acting now to avoid bigger problems later.
- The recall is currently for the U.S., but if you own a Nissan or Infiniti in another country—especially if it was imported—you might want to check your car’s status just in case.
So, if you have a Nissan Rogue, Altima, or one of the affected Infiniti models, make sure to check your mail and get your car looked at. It’s always better to be safe, and the repairs won’t cost you anything.
